Poynton CC Press Release – Death of Andy McAlpine

Poynton Cricket Club mourns one of its best loved players

Poynton 2nd XI captain Andy McAlpine died peacefully on Sunday afternoon after a six month battle against leukaemia at the age of 28.

He had opened the bowling for the 2nd XI since the age of 15. The highlight of his five years as captain was winning the 2nd XI Division One Championship, and with it promotion, for the first time in more than 25 years. Andy has left behind a brilliant younger second team with the same passion for the game. Jim Wilde, former Chairman and 2nd XI Captain said ‘It is a sad loss. Macca had so much more to offer and Poynton Cricket Club will be the poorer for his passing.’

Rick Clark, a close friend and fellow cricketer, summed up the feelings of many when he said ’28 wasn’t a big score, but it was full of class and a cameo of the highest order.’

There will be a memorial service at Norbury Parish Church, Hazel Grove on Friday 27 June.
